What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga. - IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists)

Yoga therapy, calm, relaxation

Drawing from Yogic science and the Ayurvedic system of health care, Yoga Therapy is an integrated mind-body approach for restoring balance and adaptive functioning to the physical (musculoskeletal), physiological (digestion, respiration, cardiovascular, endocrine and immune), and mental/emotional systems.

It is a person-centered approach that helps individuals manage and improve their health through tailored yoga practices.

Broad Scope of Application

Yoga therapy is becoming more scientifically recognised and is being increasingly offered along side western medical approaches to conditions or symptoms.

Yoga therapy prioritises wider wellbeing, which can improve health markers over a broad scope of issues – for instance, someone using yoga therapy in their treatment plan for panic attacks could also find that their blood pressure improves. The potential to address ancillary challenges which worsen health outcomes, such as loneliness and stress, also means that yoga therapy can not only address acute symptoms but give clients the tools to cope over the long term and prevent further problems from developing.

Yoga Therapy can be used to help treat, manage or support conditions such as:

  • Back pain

  • Musculoskeletal conditions

  • Chronic pain

  • Osteoporosis

  • Arthritis

  • Scoliosis

  • Neurological conditions

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Endocrine conditions

  • Respiratory conditions

  • Cardiovascular conditions

  • Digestive disorders

  • Cancer

  • Womens health issues

  • Mental health conditions

  • Chronic stress

  • Addiction

  • Nervous system disorders

Yoga Therapy Session Structure

First session only - Intake

The first session is slightly longer and includes the initial intake. It runs for 90 mins - 2hrs which includes an in depth discussion based on your health information form. We will consider your current health, lifestyle habits, goals and priorities in yoga therapy and you can ask me any questions. I will also look at how your body moves taking into consideration any structural imbalances, or areas of tension/immobility. I will undertake a breathing assessment where I will observe your habitual breathing pattern and identify any elements of the breath that need support. We will also try some asanas and pranayama (breathing techniques) based on my findings. We will finish by exploring some restorative yoga postures and relaxation. I will then design a short personal practice for you to do at home. This will include a range of yoga tools depending on your priorities and will be sent in the form of a drawn practice sheet emailed to you as a PDF. We will always go through the practice together in each session.

Single additional session

Single follow up session runs for between 45-60mins. Additional sessions are to continue to refine the sequence adding more relevant elements as we learn what is working, and to keep track of any changes in the breath, posture or symptoms.

*please note this is only available after the first session

Block of 3 follow up sessions

Each additional session runs for between 45-60mins and offer us the opportunity to continue refining the sequence and to go deeper by building a therapeutic relationship. You will receive a practice each week to take home. By the final session we will have developed a well rounded practice for you to continue to do after we stop seeing each other relative to your needs and goals.

*please note this is only available after the first session

Four session package

This is the option for you if you are committed to trying yoga therapy. You will receive the guaranteed four sessions which are the basis in which to create the best sequence for your needs. This package includes the first intake session and the 3 follow up sessions.

1:1 Yoga Therapy - Prices

I am currently a graduating yoga therapist. I have finished my official two year training and I am now working toward completing my practicum hours to gain client experience and become certified by the IAYT. As I am still practicing and developing I would like to increase the number of clients I can offer help, and also to gain a wide range of experience.

For this reason I currently offer 1:1 yoga therapy sessions at your home for free or for an optional donation*. This helps me reach as many clients as possible to help me learn and gain confidence.  You can make a donation at any point during our sessions together and this will be gratefully welcomed but it is not a requirement. It just helps me to continue working and offers me support and encouragement for the energy I put into the process. The more people I see the more I can develop my services, and you have the option to try yoga therapy without a big financial commitment. I strongly encourage you to take this opportunity. I have seen huge transformations in clients I have already worked with, sometimes it's like magic.

Once I gain certification I will charge the official rate for private sessions at the same level as other yoga therapists in the area. I will no longer be able to offer free or donation sessions unless I can find some form of funding, or under certain unique circumstances.

I am a fully certified and registered yoga teacher and I am insured with Balens UK as a Practicing Trainee Yoga Therapist.

*You can make any size donation you feel comfortable with. It is completely ok if you cannot afford a donation, all I ask is that you could give me a review and share what I do with your friends and family. I also welcome skills exchanges.

In some cases I may ask for some photos which can help me with marketing to future clients. This can be discussed between us (your face will never be shown).

I have been seeing Angel for yoga therapy aimed at treating my sciatica and weakness in my lower back, both issues I have been living with for over a decade. Right from the first session, I have felt that I am in knowledgeable and sympathetic hands. Angel has taken time to really listen to me, to study my posture and mobility and, over the weeks, has created a truly holistic practice that I can incorporate into my existing exercise programme.
